If you’re looking for your first home it can be difficult to know where to begin. Aside from working out what you can afford and what kind of mortgage you’ll be able to get, you need to view often dozens of properties to find the one that’s right for you.
Once you find what you think is the perfect home, make sure you’re not caught out by unexpected issues or costs. The Mirror reported on a survey conducted by First Direct, which revealed the top ten questions homeowners wish they’d asked before making an offer on a property.
Top of the list was when the boiler was last serviced. That might sound like a very detailed question at this stage, but one in four buyers revealed that they regretted not checking the boiler’s condition and service history before moving in.
Next up was checking the interior and exterior walls for signs of damp or cracks, with 27 per cent of buyers under the age of 35 wishing they’d paid more attention to these signs.
Checking the electrical system, looking at the condition of the roof, making sure the central heating works as it should and finding out what the broadband speed were also made the list.
Buyers should also visit the property they’re interested in at different times of the day and check out the surrounding neighbourhood too. 40 per cent of homeowners said this was a must.
If anything does need to be fixed, it also pays to get quotes for the work early in the process.
Given that more and more young people are accepting help from their parents or other family members to get a deposit together, it is wise to make sure you don’t end up with a large, unexpected repair bill as soon as you move into your new home.
